Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the safety of roasted and ground kernels of an edible variety of Jatropha curcas L. (Xuta) as a traditional food from a third country (TF). Xuta kernels have been consumed for more than 25 years in Mexico. The TF is intended to be used as a food ingredient in grain-based products and soups. The TF was previously evaluated via a notification procedure. During that assessment, safety objections were raised concerning phorbol esters (PEs) and other compositional parameters. The Panel considers that the additional analyses provided on contaminants, pesticide residues and microbiological criteria do not raise safety concerns. Regarding PEs, the applicant developed and validated a method for their quantification in the TF. In addition, a sampling procedure was established to avoid the presence of PEs caused by accidental commingling with non-edible kernels of Jatropha curcas L. Under a conservative exposure scenario for PEs from the consumption of the TF and taking into account uncertainties associated with the analytical method, the highest estimated PE exposure resulted in margins of exposure (MoEs) of 1900 or greater when compared with the reference point derived from a subchronic study in pigs. The Panel considers that the derived MoEs are sufficient to ensure the safe consumption of the TF under the proposed conditions of use. The Panel considers that the newly submitted evidence resolves the safety objections raised during the earlier assessment of the TF notification, that consumption of the TF is not nutritionally disadvantageous, and concludes that the TF is safe under the proposed conditions of use.
